Beer Carbonation

Measuring Carbon Dioxide

Carbonation pressure in the bright beer tank is ideally measured in the headspace at the top of the tank. In practice, many brewers are not equipped for this, so they measure the pressure at the carbon dioxide tank regulator. The regulator pressure is always higher than the headspace pressure because of pressure loss in the carbonation stone and in other restrictions. Carbonation is measured either by using a Gehaltemeter or Zahm & Nagel meter.
